Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Traditionally, tip is calculated on the pre-tax amount. However, many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is usually small. This calculator tips on the bill amount before tax.
How do I split the bill fairly?
For equal splitting, divide the total by the number of people; this calculator does that. For unequal splitting (different orders), calculate each person's share of the bill first, then add a proportional tip; the uneven part has to be done manually or with a separate drinks bill. If the bill already includes tax, enter the tax-inclusive total and the per-person amount carries the tip with it; and if a service charge is already on the bill, set the tip to 0% to avoid double-tipping.
What if service was poor?

Usually a base or rounding difference: splitting pre-tax vs post-tax, including or excluding the tip in the split, or rounding to the nearest dollar changes the result by a few percent.
